O peixe-leão ameaça à biodiversidade marinha da costa da América do Sul.

Nativo dos Oceanos Pacífico e Índico, o peixe-leão (Pterois volitans) tornou-se uma forte ameaça a biodiversidade marinha da costa da América do Sul. Atrativo pelas suas cores brilhantes e barbatanas diferenciadas, o peixe-leão, tem toxinas que não são fatais mas causam muita dor, seu apetite é voraz e engole presas inteiras. Se alimenta de vários peixes menores e causa desequilíbrio no ecossistema, podendo inclusive gerar extinção de outras espécies.

Com cerca de 35cm, o peixe-leão tem um estômago que pode expandir até 30 vezes o seu volume inicial. Além de comer muitos peixes, a espécie se reproduz facilmente e não tem predadores nessa região.

Ele representa uma séria ameaça à fauna local de peixes e invertebrados de que se alimentam, ocasionando desequilíbrio ao ecossistema marinho da região.

Acredita-se que essa espécie tenha chegado a América do Sul devido a passagem do furacão Andrew, na Flórida, EUA. Entre 1999 e 2010 a espécie invadiu o mar do Caribe, o Golfo do México, o litoral da Costa Rica e do Panamá, a costa da Colômbia e, mais recentemente, a costa da Venezuela. Teme-se que a invasão prossiga e chegue à costa brasileira, inicialmente no Amapá.
