Recifes de corais podem desaparecer

Cientistas dos Estados Unidos, Austrália e Alemanha fizeram um estudo que aponta, que a acidificação dos oceanos, fenômeno que reduz o pH das águas devido ao aumento do CO2 atmosférico, poderá reduzir a diversidade e a capacidade de recomposição de recifes de corais ainda este século. Eles estudaram espécies dos ecossistemas localizados próximos a três infiltrações vulcânicas, que emitem naturalmente CO2 no fundo do mar, na Papua Nova Guiné.

Os cientistas detalharam os resultados de uma exposição prolongada dos recifes de corais a altos níveis de dioxido de carbono e baixo pH no oceano Indo-Pacífico, simulando assim, a projeção de aumento dos níveis de CO2 na atmosfera, que poderá ocorrer até o final deste século e tornaria os oceanos mais ácidos.

Esse estudo mostra ainda mudanças na composição das espécies de corais e redução da biodiversidade e recrutamento no recife com a redução do pH de 8,1 para 7,8. Eles relataram ainda que o desenvolvimento de recifes cessaria a um pH abaixo de 7,7.


O quarto Relatório de Avaliação do IPCC (Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas) estima que até o final do século, o pH dos oceanos diminuirá dos atuais 8,1 para 7,8 devido ao aumento das concentrações atmosféricas de CO2.
